Patsy Cline: Sweet Dreams The Complete Decca Studio Masters 1960 : 1963 just came in the mail. It's all 51 songs from this era, and it's great. The set is digitally remastered by Mark Omann. The liner notes, complete with some great familiar and not as familiar photos were written by Colin Escott.
The set is available at www.hip-oselect.com to all except EU and British residents.
I've got the boxed set and the remastered greatest hits CD, and I have to say this set has a subtle sound improvement. We'll probably never get better sound than this based on the limitations of the source tapes.
This is a nice limited edition set that's limited to 6000 copies. If you don't know about Hip-O Select, they're a classy reissues operation.
As much as I am enjoying the set, there's one question I have. The liner notes refer to Randy Hughes as Patsy Cline's lover. I've never seen this written elsewhere. Is this truth or just a gossip item?
As a side note, I visited Winchester for the first time last year, and I was thoroughly disappointed at the crappy stretch of road they're calling Patsy Cline Boulevard. It's sandwiched between a Lowe's and a Border's Bookstore, if memory serves me correctly. Also, the state of the house is disgraceful. I did manage to pick up a book I'd never seen before, "Patsy Cline - Singing Girl from Shenandoah Valley" . It's a nice, but slight book. It's beyond time for this area to recognize Patsy's enduring popularity and sheer brilliance in phrasing and style that puts her beyond Country and Pop superstardom.
I hope that the upcoming “A Crazy Affair...Remembering Patsy Cline”, on Friday, March 12, 2010, in Winchester will spark a renewed interest in creating a lasting and suitable memorial to her brief but brilliant time on earth.
