It's midnight where I'm posting from, so....
Happy 75th, Ginny... this is for you:
I find it difficult to imagine that there are people who can sit down and listen to Patsy Cline sing and then walk away, unaffected. Patsy has much to teach anyone who is paying attention; I'm sure the "lesson" is different for each of us. She taught me the importance of being true to yourself -- "To thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." Yes, Patsy embodied the words of Shakespeare! Amazing, eh? She taught me that a life based on anything other than a pursuit of truth and integrity is a waste of time. She taught me that life is short. She taught me how very much the choices we make matter. She taught me caution in all affairs of the heart. (Even when the Wizard said, "Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable," the Tin Man still wanted one. Patsy would understand that.) She taught me how much we can impact the next generation, whether it's our own children or the children of others. She taught me the meaning of immortality as I watch young children sing her songs.
The Patsy Cline School of Life is a hard-knock school, but it's a worthy one, if you hang in there. Some of the lessons are beautiful, some can be painful. But she's a divine teacher! She understands life, she understands our hearts and our trials, but she also understands our joys and celebrates them with us.
I never see Patsy as perfect, and I'm not one of those who worships her as a god; but I do see her as someone who places an importance on the need to strive to be the best that we can be; to live our lives with integrity; and to give generously whenever we can, however we can. Otherwise, why the hell bother with this gift of life we've been given?
...and the best part is, if you ever need a refresher course, she's only a song away.
